Lincoln Evening News, Thursday, June 25, 1896: Around Rokeby A.F. Steinhausen gave his goat a good-bye shake last Saturday. Art, Charles is trying to trade his buggy for a bike. B.F. Smith and his son Daniel took a drive over into Cass county on Saturday. Miss Florence Geyer and Miss Blanche Damrow of Jamaica visited with friends near Wesley chapel last Sunday. The Epworth league of Wesley Chapel will hold a Fourth of July picnic at A.E. Bowers' grove. Wallace Angelow spent Sunday with his home folks. Rev. J.W. Embree addressed his old congregation at Wesley Chapel last Sunday. The Children's day exercises at Rokeby last Sabbath were well rendered and were appreciated by a large audience. Will Chittenden reports that some chicken-eating son of wickedness visited his hennery last Friday night annd won the affections of a dozen and a half fair young "biddies." Miss Nelson, the Rokeby postmistress, met with a very painful accident Saturday afternoon. While operating a sewing machine her finger came in contact with the needle which went right on through and clinched. The services of a physician were secured and it was found necessary to lance the finger before the needle could be removed. Mrs. B.F. Mundort of Lincoln is spending the week visiting around Rokeby. H.H. Miller is the proud possessor of a harrow, a lister and a potato patch. He had also at one time an idea that if the combined action of the harrow and lister was brought to bear upon the potato patch, a glorious harvest of "mumphies" would accrue therefrom. Since he put his theory into practice he has been a wiser looking man with a sadder looking potato patch. He says that from all appearances his cellar will be as void of tubers as it was in the days when he used to "Whistle and Wait for Katie." The Y.P.S.C.E. of Rokeby will give an ice cream social at the Rokeby schoolhouse on Friday evening, June 26th. Everybody is cordially invited. ----- Copyright © 2008 Susan Reddish Curelop for DCHS All rights reserved
